DSK Angus
DSK Angus Stud
DSK Angus Stud was founded in 1988 with the purchase of females from the great Calleen herd, then Dulverton, Te Mania, Strathtay and No. 1 Angus studs. All these females were the essential beginning of what we have today.
In 1992, the Embryo Flushing program began and every spare cent and energy from then on has gone into building the Angus herd to today’s level of over 300 registered females. The level of genetic strength seen in the DSK Angus females is what makes our herd so consistent and balanced. The Angus sires that have made an impact were with the initial input of Black Velvet Willyboy J31 in 1991. Willyboy J31 went on to win the Grand Champion Angus Award at Melbourne, Sydney & Brisbane Royals in 1991 & 1992. It took 15 yrs. for another Angus bull to achieve this result. Willyboy made a tremendous impact in the early days and can be seen prominently in the background of nearly all of our great breeding females today but there has probably been no more of an impact in the DSK Angus herd than the introduction of SVF Hi Road 956 in 1998.

Chris was always looking for power and performance in his cattle and he saw this bull in an AI catalogue and decided he liked the look of him and gave him a go. There was 300 straws of semen in this bull brought into the country with no more to follow and after initially using just 20 straws of Hi Road and 20 straws of the new fad bull New Design 036 we bought over 180 straws of Hi Road which was all we could get and we didn’t use any more 036. That’s what we thought of his progeny. This sire has produced many great bulls for us and more than a few have been used in stud herds throughout the country but by far his greatest achievement has been in the production value of his daughters.

Every great Angus animal that we produce today has Hi Road in the pedigree of the dam and we are still going back to this great sire with carefully selected embryos.

Our great Canadian Angus journey began in 2009 with the discovery of the best Angus sire we had seen to date.  Remitall H Rachis 21R. He was standing at stud at Remitall Angus as a 3yr old with standout calves already on the ground. We knew he would work with our female herd so we snapped him up and brought in as much available semen as we possible could.  He worked even better than Hi Road in his female progeny which was quite the feat.

After another quick visit to Canada in 2012, we happened upon a small dispersal happening and after inspecting the cow herd we bought our first 2 Canadian donor females with the great Coldstream Lady Heather 92S and Coldstream Blackbird 73Y.  These 2 females alone have made an enormous impact on our herd and we are still bringing out embryos made back then and marvelling at how good they grow.  We made further investment in Canada with the introduction of donors and sires from many great herds, LLB Angus, Young Dale Angus for donors and sires (Young Dale Xcaliber 32X has been a tremendous influence and worked extremely well at DSK), Fleury Angus and KBJ Angus.

Locally the purchase of Texas Earnan L612 has proven to be a great investment with his progeny going on to be part of some of our greatest achievements to date with his sons and daughters and we are still seeing great results in his AI calves.
